This was a great night. It was guest list only so you already felt like a player before you walked through the door. Man Like Me have always been a personal favorite contemporary band of mine. Their cheeky, unpretentious and bombastic stage presence makes me feel all the cooler for witnessing it. It's great to find a band that so devilishly stray from recognized indie but still maintain their place within it's forum. This is achieved by being helplessly cool. I mean just look at those trousers - why don't I have the goolies to wear such ridiculously cool trousers - arrh that's it - because i'm not cool enough. Anyroad the great and good from the indie world turned up for this gig. Jack Penate was there, Hot Chip were there a whole bunch of people with cooler trousers than me packed out the Hackney rd strip club. I had never seen so many good looking women - even the ugly ones had better trousers than me. The new single is a great song. At first having heard it before the gig I thought it was a song that they intended to sound more accessible to the masses. It has a 'sing along' chorus that differs from their usual colloquial 'Landan' Hiperty Hop. But on the night i realised why they had chosen it as the single. It's in the very fact that it has a 'sing along' chorus - one that you really DO want to sing along to - and what the mackerel is wrong with that. they wanted it to sound that way because it sounds fun. All cliches were once ingenious turns of phrase - this song is currently one of those great turns of phrase. It is probably their best song on the album - I deplored myself at the gig for being such a cynic previously. It's a great song they're a brilliant band. Do as you will but I strongly advise going to watch their live performances for a lesson in easy cool. Look at the video below to listen the track and have a peek at how fresh their threads are.
